Dream Disciple Accelerator

Do you know the kind of disciples you are trying to develop and deploy?

In the words of Zig Ziglar, “If you shoot at nothing, you’ll hit it every time.” Maybe it’s time to create a scorecard that unifies your team and fuels your collective potential.

Great Confusion or Great Commission?

There is not a church we talk to that does not want to play a part in fulfilling the Great Commission–making disciples who make disciples. Yet, most churches do not have a shared picture of the kind of disciple they are seeking to develop. The Great Commission quickly becomes the Great Confusion.

Clarify Your Dream Disciple

Your Dream Disciple is the kind of Jesus followers your church is seeking to develop and deploy which your local community desperately needs more of. It’s a picture of transformation that then informs  your disciple-making pathway, practices and priorities.

Your Dream Disciple is biblically grounded and yet contextually connected. It’s not something you pull off the shelf, rather is crafted with your unique place and time in mind.

What best describes you?

Without clarity on your Dream Disciple, you get stuck.

You measure what is obvious (attendance, giving, and activity) rather than what is most important.

Your vehicles (a.k.a. programs) become your vision—which has a tendency to create good attendees but not reproducing disciples.

Your team is forced to define mission success on their own, creating siloed ministries.

How does identifying your Dream Disciple change the game?

Align your team so they can row in the same direction.

Move success from church space to life space—where people live, work, and play.

Reduce time spent on program management and increase your investment in people development.

Develop and evaluate your disciple-making pathway and training practices.

CASE STUDY: MENLO CHURCH

Menlo Church had been without a clear strategy for several years due to significant pastoral leadership turnover. With a new lead pastor in place, the staff team was in need of renewed focus for their ministry energy.

The result? They worked together to clarify their dream disciple, which provided a filter for all ministry activities and guided the development of a refreshed vision for their future.

The Four Roles of Menlo Church’s Dream Disciple:

  • Undivided Follower
  • Unhurried Friend
  • Sacrificial Developer
  • Thoughtful Witness

Church is a terrible hobby, and without realizing it, church leaders can very easily make the goal into the next steps that benefit the church more than the person. When we target the qualities we believe God wants to form in the life of Jesus’ followers in our community, it is exponentially more impactful. We build ministry that helps people, and they want to help that ministry help more people. This was the single most important part of our vision frame work, and it is already bearing fruit.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

As we were led to define and champion the kind of disciple God is building up for our specific mission and context, we became more unified around our mission and passionate about our people. It’s been an invaluable process for our team and church!

You can only disciple insomuch as who you are as a church. The process of developing a picture of our Dream Disciple was not only clarifying for our leadership but captured the essence of our congregation that created a collective hope that was attainable not just aspirational.

We have operated for decades with vague spiritual aspirations for our congregation. But naming our Dream Disciple was a game-changer in that it helped us to define specific outcomes for individuals to embody as followers of Jesus. These new measures will help us in mobilizing our congregation to address the unique spiritual needs of our community.

By naming the dream disciple, we have experienced members who are able to say, “imitate me as I imitate Christ.” There is a growing sensitivity to the Holy Spirit coupled with an increased intentionality in equipping others.

While in the military I learned a useful phrase when learning how to hit a target: “Aim small, miss small.” By naming our Dream Disciples I have learned what the bullseye is for making disciples in my community! Most importantly, my church knows what to aim for when it comes to making and multiplying Christ followers.

We all want to be great disciples of Jesus and make more disciples for Jesus, but we weren’t doing great at either- mostly because we could never quite figure out how to measure discipleship. The process of discovering our dream disciple roles was like finally seeing a light at the end of a dark tunnel. Not only do we know where we’re going, but we’ll know when we have arrived.

It’s been a game changer to have shared language around the kind of disciple we are seeking to be and reproduce. Having the clarity around the kind of disciple we’re developing has our whole team pulling in the same direction. I also feel more empowered since we have created a reproducible disciplining pattern. If I got hit by a bus tomorrow, a repeatable pattern has been established that those I’m discipling will continue.
